British Government Stalling Irish Language Rights Again !!

Irish Language rights were recognized in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement,

“recognise the importance of respect, understanding, and tolerance in relation to linguistic diversity…including the Irish language”

In 2006 as part of the St. Andrews Agreement the British Government agreed to legislate in Westminister for an Irish Language Act to safeguard the rights of Irish Speakers, promising,

“The Government will introduce an Irish Language Act reflecting on the experience of Wales and Ireland and work with the incoming Executive to enhance and protect the development of the Irish language.”

The British Government failed to legislate for an Irish Language Act.

In January 2020 unionist political leaders agreed to enact an Irish Language Act by April 2020 as part of a series of commitments. This agreement was made by the two governments and the parties.

Due to the refusal of the Unionist parties to honor their agreements the British Government again committed to legislate for an Irish Language Act.

The British Secretary of State Brandon Lewis said at the end of October that he would introduce the legislation. That time has now passed and again unionist parties and the British Government are failing to honor their agreements.
