Sinn Féin MP John Finucane has called on the Irish government to take an interstate case against the British government over their flawed and irredeemable Legacy Act.

John Finucane said, “The British government’s fatally flawed Act of Shame recently passed through British parliament. It received Royal Assent yesterday and is now enacted into law.

“This Act has been forced through despite clear opposition from victims and families, all the political parties in this island, human rights experts, churches, members of the US Congress and Senate, UN Rapporteurs, The Council of Europe and the Irish government.

“It pulls the shutters down on victims and families ever getting truth and justice and continues to hide the role of British state forces and their agencies in the conflict.

“Families have already been forced to take legal challenges at the Belfast High Court against this shameful Act.

“The Irish government needs to confront this denial of human rights and breach of international human rights law through an interstate case and international action against the British government.

“Sinn Féin will continue to stand with families in their campaigns for truth and justice.”
