High Hopes

A Letter from Ireland

a Chairde,

I like the idea of Thanksgiving although I’m not a fan of Turkey (or links to early colonialism). It is not something that we celebrate in Ireland, but we should. Taking a day to be thankful for all that we have is a good thing. Reflecting on what is most important; family, friends and a duty to make the lives of others a little bit better.

I am thankful for the opportunity to be part of a generation that delivered a peaceful pathway to Irish Unity. Thankful for the many friends I have made in the US and Canada who are equally committed to building a better Ireland.

I remain inspired by the people I meet day and daily. At a time when the world seems uncertain and conflict is played out on the news and on our phones, I remain certain that justice and peace will prevail.

This week, John McNally from California shared a story with me of a lecture he had conducted jointly with a 102 year World War II veteran.

Howard Buford fought in the battle of the Bulge and put his survival down to luck. He made it home, but many didn’t. He believes passionately in democracy and does not think that war is the best way to resolve issues.

When asked about how he remains happy and vibrant he simply said, “High hopes and low expectations.”

Let us continue to travel with high hopes, and remember the importance of gratitude.
