The 1981 HUNGER STRIKES AND SUPPORT IN THE US AND CANADA

Forty years ago, this weekend, the 1981 Hunger Strike came to an end. The death of 10 Irish Patriots in Long Kesh jail marked a turning point not only in prison conditions but also in the Irish Republican struggle.

The peace, progress, and opportunity to build a new and united Ireland we enjoy finds its roots in the sacrifice of the hunger strikers.

This week they will be remembered across Ireland and the US. We will screen a specially recorded interview with Laurence McKeown who survived 70 days on Hunger Strike on Sunday, October 3rd at noon

As part of the Hunger Strike Commemorations, those involved have recorded a series of podcasts, “Guthanna 81”.

The most recent of which is a short remembrance by Ted Howell on the context of the Hunger Strike and the solidary actions on this side of the Atlantic.
